More than 31,000 Kaiser Permanente nurses and healthcare workers walked out of hospitals and clinics across California and Hawaii in an indefinite strike over staffing levels and alleged unfair labor practices. The United Nurses Associations of California/Union of Health Care Professionals voted January 16 to authorize the strike. The walkout is expected to affect roughly 20 Kaiser hospitals and 200 clinics. UNAC/UHCP alleges Kaiser suspended national bargaining and attempted to sidestep good-faith negotiation practices. Kaiser says its offer includes a 21-percent pay increase and that leadership will meet for local bargaining. The Alliance of Health Care Unions filed an unfair labor practice case with the NLRB. The Department of Justice dropped efforts to obtain transgender patients' records from Children's Hospital Los Angeles.
