Goodbye Skype, hello Teams: How Microsoft is making the switch easy
Briefly

Microsoft announced that Skype will be officially retired on May 5, redirecting its focus towards Teams. Users can transition by signing into Teams with their existing Skype credentials, allowing access to current chats and contacts. Until retirement, Skype users can communicate with Teams users, and can export their data if desired. Paid Skype subscriptions will remain active until April 3, after which only limited access via Teams will be allowed. Skype's decline reflects its struggles in a competitive market, especially after its peak usage during the pandemic.
As of now, Microsoft no longer offers Skype Subscriptions, Skype Numbers, or Skype Credit. Existing paid options and subscriptions will continue to automatically renew until April 3.
Until the official retirement, Skype users will still be able to call and chat with people on Teams, and vice versa.
To encourage this transition, Microsoft will soon allow users to sign in to the free version of Teams with their Skype username and password.
The news is hardly surprising, given Skype's checkered history, as the service has fallen by the wayside due to competition.
