"You just wake up in a shock, he said. You want to delay the real understanding of it. Now Molochnikov, 34, has lived in the U.S. for almost four years."
"We tried our best to show that moment in the play, he said. That feeling that life sort of stopped for a second."
"To imagine that your country to be bombing those other cities, it was so unimaginable, Molochnikov said."
Alexander Molochnikov's life changed dramatically when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. After moving to the U.S. to study film, he felt the absence of theater. He created a play titled Seagull, True Story, which took over three years to produce. The play, an adaptation of Chekhov's work, is divided into two acts, depicting life in Russia post-invasion and in the U.S. Molochnikov's character, Kon, faces the challenges of directing amidst the turmoil of war, illustrating the emotional impact of the conflict on individuals and society.
