New Canadian art museum seeks to connect disparate disciplines and a university campus
Briefly

The Marianne and Edward Gibson Art Museum, the first purpose-built art museum at SFU, is set to open on September 20. The inaugural exhibition, titled Edge Effects, reflects the museum’s curatorial vision and the campus's architectural ethos by Arthur Erickson. Designed as a welcoming, interconnected space, the museum features a research laboratory, art studio, courtyard, and provides free admission. Kimberly Phillips, the director, aims to create a thriving environment for artists and diverse communities. The exhibition will showcase 11 artists who will examine concepts of 'edges' in their work.
"We imagine the Marianne and Edward Gibson Art Museum to be a place that, metaphorically speaking, encourages edge effects, situated at the threshold of the university's academic community and energised by its context."
The show encapsulates both the new museum's curatorial vision as well as architect Arthur Erickson's original inter-disciplinary ethos for the SFU campus on Burnaby Mountain.
