The San Francisco Bay Area Bench Collective (SFBABC) has installed eight new bus benches throughout San Francisco, primarily near Mission Street, addressing the city's notorious lack of adequate bus stops. Advocates emphasize the need for benches to enhance accessibility, especially for vulnerable groups. The benches aim to create safer and more comfortable transit experiences amidst the city's budget challenges. SFBABC has previously installed a total of 80 benches across the East Bay, with minimal removals due to compliance or maintenance issues. This initiative follows earlier efforts by the Public Bench Project, which focuses on business partnerships instead of transit stops.
Despite being the urban center of the bay, San Francisco has the worst bus stops of any cities here, almost always lacking signage, often lacking clear red curbs, lacking shelters, and of course lacking seating.
The SFBABC's installation of benches at Muni stops demonstrates a clear desire from the public to improve accessibility and comfort for all people-especially children, families, seniors, and people with disabilities-at Muni stops.
In addition to increasing accessibility and comfort for people, installing benches at transit stops increases safety, making these improvements a win-win-win for the City at a time when it faces a massive budget deficit.
While the Public Bench Project (PBP) has done so for years, all PBP benches go to local businesses or neighbors, while these are at bus stops.
