A protest against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in San Francisco escalated into violence on Sunday night, resulting in around 60 arrests. The protest was sparked by President Trump's deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles, heightening tensions following a recent surge in ICE activities in California. Police declared an unlawful assembly, and violent confrontations ensued, including assaults and property damage, resulting in injuries to officers. Mayor Daniel Lurie condemned the destructive behavior, emphasizing that violence against law enforcement is unacceptable.
On Sunday in San Francisco, hundreds began gathering in solidarity around 6 p.m. outside ICE headquarters at 630 Sansome St. before entering into a 40-minute standoff with police.
Some in the crowd committed assault, felony vandalism and property damage, according to police. Two officers were injured, and one was transported to the hospital.
