"These small events, as all small events are, are not indicative of an impending large earthquake,"
"We live in earthquake country, so we should always be prepared for a large event,"
Seismic activity resumed near San Ramon with two tremors measuring magnitude 3.4 and 2.9 occurring 19 seconds apart. The region experienced more than 300 earthquakes from November through December, and more than 600 people reported feeling the recent shaking. Quakes under 2.5 are rarely felt, while those between 2.5 and 5.4 can be felt and sometimes cause minor damage. San Ramon sits atop the Calaveras Fault with smaller interconnected fractures branching from the main fault. USGS research geophysicist Annemarie Baltay said small events do not indicate an impending large quake, but the long-term risk in the Bay Area remains high, with a 72 percent chance of a magnitude 6.7 or larger event by 2043.
