Toyota engineers build transparent drivable sphere that's a fantasy hamster wheel - Yanko Design
"The Toyota Engineering Society unveiled a spherical mobility device designed to carry passengers, employing a hamster wheel-like mechanism for propulsion."
"Using clear, durable materials, an acrylic specialist faced challenges to achieve a crystal-clear shell for the two-meter-diameter sphere."
"The refined cart inside the sphere includes safety features and can reach speeds of up to 10 km/h, with movement controlled by a joystick."
"Mixed Reality tools helped the team test design aspects such as door positioning and interior layout prior to finalizing their innovative device."
The Toyota Engineering Society has created an innovative spherical mobility device with a hamster wheel-like propulsion system, designed to carry two passengers. The project, part of the 2024 theme, challenged over 20,000 engineers and resulted in a two-meter-diameter sphere. Significant fabrication challenges were overcome while ensuring clarity and durability in the materials used. Inside the sphere, a refined cart with safety features and joystick controls allows for both manual and autonomous movement, reaching speeds of 10 km/h while maintaining rider comfort through internal weight adjustments.
