Felix Baumgartner, renowned for breaking the sound barrier in a 24-mile skydive, died in a paraglider crash in Porto Sant Elpidio, Italy. He was 56 years old. Baumgartner's famous 2012 jump from a capsule at 24 miles made him a symbol of extreme sports. The mayor of the city expressed deep sorrow over his loss. Baumgartner achieved a speed of 843.6 mph, becoming the first human to break the sound barrier by free-fall, a record that stood until 2014, when it was surpassed.
