The usage of Linux on business desktops and laptops has shown a gradual increase, rising from 1.6% in January 2025 to 1.9% in June and reaching 2.5% for new assets. This growth, measured from 18.5 million devices, suggests a significant trend rather than a minor change. Lansweeper's CTO emphasizes that the main driver for this trend is heightened security concerns amid rising cyber threats, with many organizations seeking stronger protective measures. Additionally, the adoption is being fostered by the preferences of engineers involved in DevOps-related activities, especially notable in Europe compared to North America.
According to Lansweeper scans from over 18.5 million devices, Linux usage on business endpoints has climbed from 1.6% in January 2025 to 1.9% in June, and reached 2.5% on newly added assets.
Guido Patanella, CTO of Lansweeper, predicts an exponential increase in Linux usage, stating, "I think there will be a continuous acceleration," primarily driven by security concerns.
While Linux has its vulnerabilities, security fears due to the exponential growth of cyber threats are pushing organizations towards Linux adoption for better system hardening.
The preference for Linux among engineers related to DevOps activities also contributes to the gradual increase in Linux adoption, especially when comparing Europe and North America.
