Taiwan's International Trade Administration has placed both Huawei and SMIC on an entity list, requiring government approval for Taiwanese businesses to ship resources to them. This situation is expected to significantly disrupt China’s ambitions in developing advanced AI semiconductors, as the two companies will no longer access vital plant construction technologies, materials, and equipment from Taiwan. The administration's decision reflects broader concerns over national security and arms proliferation involving entities from China, among others.
As a result, Huawei and SMIC will lose access to Taiwan's plant construction technologies, materials, and equipment, potentially setting back China's efforts to develop new AI semiconductors.
On June 10, we added some 601 entities from Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Myanmar and mainland China including Huawei and SMIC to the entity list to combat arms proliferation and address other national security concerns.
