Judge James Donato ordered Android to allow third-party app stores, prohibit tying Google Play Billing to app distribution, and permit developers to link to external app downloads in the US. Google updated its support pages with a January 28 deadline to enroll in new programs for alternative billing and external content links that impose their own fees. Google is not collecting those fees yet but plans to charge $2.85 per app and $3.65 per game for installs within 24 hours of an external link click, plus a 20 percent cut on in-app purchases and 10 percent on auto-renewing subscriptions. Enrollment by the deadline is required and the fees apply unless a different settlement is adopted.
