One of TV's Best Sitcoms Is Ending Early. Fans Are Shocked-but It's Actually a Good Thing.
"After we finished Season 3, Zach and I just both had the feeling where we feel pretty burnt out after putting years and years into this-but also pretty accomplished. We wouldn't wanna be doing more seasons, like, halfhearted. That's not fair to the audience, to give you guys fuckin' slop."
"This is not a bit, this is not a joke. Michael and I are here to announce that Smiling Friends will be ending. Season 3, which just wrapped in November, would mark the titular friends' final adventure."
Smiling Friends, the popular Adult Swim animated sitcom, concluded after Season 3 when co-creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel announced the cancellation via audio announcement. Despite Adult Swim greenlighting seasons 4 and 5 and beginning development on new episodes, the creators chose to end the series themselves rather than continue while burnt out. Cusack and Hadel emphasized they didn't want to produce subpar content for their audience. Two completed, unreleased episodes will air on April 12 as a final offering. The creators plan to collaborate on different projects through their newly launched indie-animation studio, Zam, while Adult Swim remains open to future collaborations.
