Increased food waste and poor waste management are contributing to the rise in rat sizes in the UK. Experts assert that adult rats can grow to significant lengths, with some captured specimens measuring up to 22 inches. The condition of urban environments, particularly in terms of the presence of discarded food, is fueling this growth. As rats adapt to their surroundings and access more food, they can evolve more quickly than some other mammals. This situation presents challenges for pest control efforts in managing larger rat populations.
Experts have noted that overflowing bins and food waste contribute significantly to the growing sizes of rats in urban areas, leading to larger and more difficult-to-manage populations.
Rats in the UK, when well-fed, can grow significantly, with adult specimens reported to reach lengths of 20 to 30cm and weights up to 600g, according to Dr. Steven Belmain.
