In a recent speech, California Governor Gavin Newsom condemned President Trump's decision to deploy National Guard troops, claiming it was an unnecessary escalation that undermined democracy. He argued that California could handle the protests without federal intervention, emphasizing that Trump's actions represented a broader threat to American traditions. Newsom labeled the deployment of military personnel for domestic law enforcement as illegal and expressed a desire to prevent the militarization of streets, asserting that such measures could inflame tensions rather than provide safety. His remarks signal growing concerns over federal overreach in state matters.
This isn't just about protests here in Los Angeles. When Donald Trump sought blanket authority to commandeer the National Guard, he made that order apply to every state in this nation.
This is about all of us. This is about you. California may be first, but it clearly will not end here. Other states are next. Democracy is next.
The deployment of National Guard and Marine forces was done illegally and for no reason and pointed to a legal challenge filed by the state against the Trump Administration.
We honor their service, we honor their bravery, but we do not want our streets militarized by our own armed forces—not in L.A., not in California, not anywhere.
