Senator Jack Reed has raised serious concerns regarding Defense Secretary Pete Hegsethâs use of the messaging app Signal to share sensitive military operations. Following revelations of Hegseth sharing such information in a group chat that included non-Defense Department personnel, Reed argues this could jeopardize national security. The Pentagon's inspector general is currently evaluating if classified information was compromised. Hegseth has defended his actions, claiming the information shared was informal and unclassified. Reed, who opposed Hegseth's nomination, believes he is a threat to U.S. national security, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
"This is just a complete meltdown of common defense and it endangers our national security," Reed told Morning Edition.
"What was shared over Signal, then and now, however you characterize it, was informal, unclassified coordination for media coordination and other things," Hegseth told Fox & Friends.
