Trump threatens NATO allies over Strait of Hormuz help
"Trump said he had asked some seven countries to help escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz and said some had agreed, although he did not name them. He said it was in these countries' interests to help, including China, which is heavily reliant on the Strait of Hormuz for its oil supply. He also said the U.S. would "remember" if NATO counterparts didn't help."
"EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said Monday she had spoken to U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres about how to unblock the Strait. "It is in our interest to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and that's why we are also discussing what we can do in this regard from the European side," she said."
With the Iran war in its third week and oil prices reaching nearly $105 per barrel, President Trump has called on multiple countries including China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the U.K. to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping route where approximately one-fifth of global oil supplies pass through. Iran has blocked this vital waterway since the war began. Trump claims some countries have agreed to assist, though he has not identified them, and warned that failure to help would be detrimental to NATO's future. Foreign nations have responded cautiously to the request, with EU and British officials expressing interest in keeping the strait open but avoiding direct military commitments. Trump has threatened that the U.S. will "remember" which allies do not participate.
