Following a recent purge at the Pentagon, former chief of staff Colin Carroll criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for his overemphasis on handling press leaks, stating it detracted from the team's objectives. Carroll indicated that half of Hegseth's time was consumed by leak investigations, which he deemed harmful to national interests. Despite the criticism, President Trump expressed continued support for Hegseth, predicting improvement. Carroll's comments suggest internal challenges at the Pentagon and reflect concerns about leadership priorities impacting the Defense Department's effectiveness.
"He was very focused on the leaks, and I think it's kind of consumed the team a little bit," Colin Carroll stated, criticizing Hegseth's leak investigation preoccupations.
"That's a bad thing for America, it's a bad thing for the president's objectives," said Carroll, highlighting the detrimental impact of the leak investigations on national goals.
Trump expressed confidence in Hegseth, stating, "I think he's gonna get it together. I had a talk with him, a positive talk, but I had a talk with him."
Carroll described Hegseth's performance as a "tale of two Petes," noting his effectiveness in meetings while also fixating on odd details.
