Backstrom played 17 seasons with the Capitals, notching 1,033 points in 1,105 games. He is the franchise leader in assists, with 762 of those contributions coming on Ovechkin's goals.
Following his contract expiration, Backstrom is reportedly expected to sign with Brynas IF in Sweden, potentially resuming his playing career next season.
Despite not playing last season, Backstrom remained involved with the Capitals, practicing with Ovechkin and supporting his teammate during crucial milestones.
