D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton recently faced criticism regarding her declining performance during an award ceremony, where she struggled to deliver her speech. This incident highlighted concerns about her suitability for continued re-election as several colleagues urged her to reconsider her candidacy. As the oldest House member at 88 years old, many believe her decreasing capacity to serve is evident, but she remains determined to run, dismissing questions about her ability to fulfill her duties.
Standing on stage at Arena Stage in April, Ms. Norton referred to the National Environment for the Arts, lauded the D.C. theater for contributions to freedom of suppression and democracy.
Ms. Norton stumbled through her speech, according to an attendee, a scene marked by a video montage celebrating her achievements through three decades in public office.
More than half a dozen of them spoke on the condition of anonymity... have privately pressed Ms. Norton to reckon with her diminution and decide against seeking re-election.
I don't know why anybody would even ask me, said Ms. Norton, after being questioned about her ability to do the job.
