Pakistan is preparing to take international legal action against India due to India's suspension of a critical water-sharing agreement, the Indus Waters Treaty, after a deadly militant attack in Kashmir. Pakistani officials, including Law Minister Aqeel Malik, have confirmed consultations for various legal avenues, including potential actions through the World Bank, the International Court of Justice, and raising the issue at the United Nations Security Council. This escalation underscores the tension between the two nuclear-armed rivals and highlights the treaty's significance amid ongoing conflicts over terrorism accusations and water resources.
"Legal strategy consultations are almost complete," Malik said in an interview with Reuters late on April 28.
"The water treaty now looks to be a potential flashpoint in the unpredictable situation between the nuclear-armed neighbors that was sparked by the militant attack."
