Many people believe that flexibility is required for yoga, but it is not necessary. Props like yoga straps help improve alignment and provide support. However, gripping a strap may exacerbate wrist issues like arthritis. Certain poses can lead to increased discomfort in the wrists. To alleviate this, several methods exist to use yoga straps while protecting the wrists: the Hand Wrap, Prayer Hands, and Elbow Hold techniques, which all involve adjusting the way one holds the strap to reduce strain.
Whether you already experience wrist discomfort or are looking for ways to prevent it, there are several ways to use a strap to ensure it protects this sensitive part of the body.
Form a large loop with the yoga strap and buckle it into place. Slip your wrists and hands inside the looped strap and reach your fingers around it.
The strap should rest against your hands between your index fingers and thumbs.
Bring the palms of your hands together in prayer position with your forearms inside the looped strap. Let the strap rest against your forearms just above your elbow crease.
