the government is now looking to demands for batteries of a different sort to sustain it. Ford and the federal government negotiated to bring three electric vehicle battery plants to Ontario investments worth billions of dollars and had hoped to not only to see those batteries go into EVs made in the province but also to have them made with parts produced in Ontario and with minerals mined and refined in the province.
While investors fixated on artificial intelligence throughout 2025, the battery supply chain quietly delivered exceptional returns, powering everything from electric vehicles to grid storage. A Supply Chain Play, Not Just an EV Bet Amplify Lithium & Battery Technology ETF (NYSEARCA:BATT) returned 66% year-to-date in 2025, nearly tripling the Nasdaq-100's 22% gain. This performance came from diversified exposure across the entire battery ecosystem: lithium miners, copper producers, battery component manufacturers, and select EV companies.
Megan O'Connor, cofounder and CEO of Nth Cycle, a Beverly, Mass.-based startup poised to disrupt the metal recycling industry with an electro-extraction system that can operate in very small facilities spread all over the world. The Nth Cycle process can handle up to five tons of material each day in a very compact facility - only 1,000 square feet, about the half the size of the typical retail storefront. That means in theory that materials could be recycled near the source and reused locally.
