Ben Cowles was released by the Toronto Blue Jays after a few weeks to make roster space for Max Scherzer's one-year contract.
The Cubs first picked Cowles up from the Yankees as part of the return for Mark Leiter Jr. at the 2024 trade deadline. Cowles was DFA'd and claimed by the White last September, then the process flipped in January. The 26-year-old infielder has yet to appear in a big league game and has slashed just .235/.299/.368 over around a season's worth of plate appearances at Triple-A.
The Cubs will get their small waiver fee from the Blue Jays, and Cowles gets a 40-man spot with the Blue Jays - who may ultimately DFA him later on and try, themselves, to sneak him through waivers. The goal being that you'd get to keep Cowles on what is effectively a minor league deal for 2026, and he would not take up a 40-man spot. All the best to him on however that winds up playing out.
Cowles would then learn he would be designated for assignment this past Monday. According to 670 The Score's Bruce Levine, the Chicago White Sox have now claimed the infielder off waivers. Cowles has been optioned to Triple-A Charlotte, and he has been added to the club's 40-man roster. This roster now sits at 39, via Sports Illustrated's Jack Ankony.
