Breast cancer survival not boosted by double mastectomy, study says

Women who had a mastectomy and kept their other breast did just as well as those who had a double mastectomy for breast cancer.
There is no survival advantage to having the other breast removed, according to a study of over 661,000 women with breast cancer.
For women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene variants, considering a double mastectomy may be beneficial due to increased cancer risk.
