4 hours agoReview: Buffalo Trace's Pricey Weller Spelt Wheat Bourbon Is Money Well Spent - Tasting Table
W.L. Weller produces wheated bourbon, using wheat instead of rye, creating a unique flavor profile.
The Buffalo Trace Single Oak barrel 80 starts at 125 proof and comes from the bottom half of a tree with 13 rings per inch. It was aged in a concrete storeroom, and the average wood grain staves were seasoned for 12 months.
You'll no doubt appreciate the balance with classic flavors of caramel, toffee and vanilla, with a backbone of light spice and oak. In many ways, it's the epitome of a well-made bourbon. Yet, there's a whole world of whiskey out there to explore. Sometimes this world can feel a little too big. With so many options available, it's hard to know where to turn. Whether buying for yourself or looking for a special gift, I've got you covered.
Green River Wheated is an approachable 90 proof (45% ABV) and a blend of 4- to 6-year-old barrels. The judging panel described it as "a richly textured bourbon, opening with aromas of peppery spice followed by a palate of grains, oats, and creamy butterscotch layered with hints of oak. This all leads to a smooth, long finish where grain fades into soft honey, spice, and warm barrel notes."
And you know what? I regret it, because by the end it was totally shot; its elaborate layers of spice, incense, and fruit had become as woody and lifeless as an antique wardrobe. The moral of the tale is carpe diem. Because, whatever people tell you, spirits do fade. It takes time - often years - but once they're opened oxygen always gets to them in the end.
"Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam, where the bourbon pours freely all day!" Okay, those aren't the real lyrics, but when filled with booze and the splendor of nature, we wouldn't blame you for belting that out instead. Buffalo Trace's iconic brand distills the picture of rolling hills and majestic creatures into whiskey, and now the brand is giving fans a chance to take in the experience like never before.
