On Friday, the US Department of Justice announced it would open a civil rights probe into the killing of 37-year-old Alex Pretti by border patrol agents on January 24. However, it has still not moved to investigate possible rights violations of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in her fatal shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on January 7.
A federal magistrate judge rejected that warrant, noting that Good was already dead and could not be considered a suspect for a warrant. It was widely reported that the Justice Department chose not to investigate the ICE officer who shot and killed Good, but the details about how top Justice officials directed the altering of the investigation and search warrant and how it was rejected as weak by a federal judge have not been previously reported.
The 37-year-old poet and mother-of-three was killed by an ICE officer January 7 in Minneapolis, Minnesota during what Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called "targeted operations" near East 34th Street and Portland Avenue. Noem alleged that "rioters began blocking ICE officers," claiming that Good "weaponized" her vehicle by attempting to run over agents. Noem labeled Good's actions as "domestic terrorism" and those of the officers as "self defense," but multiple eyewitness accounts and video footage from the incident contradict this.
San Jose State University welcomed a record number of students for the fall 2025 semester, despite concerns that the Trump administration's crackdown on higher education would cause a drop in fall enrollment. The university said Monday nearly 40,000 students enrolled at San Jose State for the fall semester an 8% increase from last year and the highest enrollment total for a single academic term in the university's 168-year history.
