Cabaret legend Justin Vivian Bond is this year's Joe's Pub Vanguard artist, and as part of their curated residency, "drag terrorist" CHRISTEENE played four sold out shows at the venue. Tuesday (1/27) was the final night, and CHRISTEENE covered songs by Lana Del Rey, Sinead O'Connor, Patti Smith, R.E.M., Tori Amos, Tina Turner, and more in addition to playing originals, backed by a band that included Mary Feaster on bass, Lyla Vander on drums, Cole Stone Frisina on sax, Joanie Drago on guitar, James Jackson on guitar and banjo, Cornelius Loy on theremin, and Adam Rineer on piano.
It's hard to imagine anyone's heart not being lifted a little by Right Back Where We Started From: the euphoric rush of new love rendered into three minutes of cod-northern soul (performed, unexpectedly, by various ex members of ELO, the Animals and 60s soft-poppers Honeybus). Avoid the 80s cover by Sinitta at all costs. A song about fresh starts for anyone who's made a new year resolution with no intention of sticking to it.
"A couple of years ago, as a birthday present to Adam Duritz, a group of friends decided to cover a few of his songs," Maria Taylor (Azure Ray) says. "Chris Carrabba and I met at Adam's New York apartment years ago. We kept in touch and talked about collaborating someday. I texted Chris and told him that I was going to cover my favorite Counting Crows song, 'Colorblind,' and asked if he would want to sing it with me. He thought it was a great idea!"
"We've been talking for years now about getting as many of the covers we've done for specific territories together and releasing them for all to hear. It's finally happening," says The Dandy Warhols' Zia McCabe of the group's new all-cover album. With a nod to Bowie (who they don't cover), it's titled PIN UPS, and will be out March 20 via Beat The World/Little Cloud Records.
It features a recording from their first show as a hardcore band, on New Year's Eve 1980 (following their even earlier days as a no wave-inspired band), an Adolescents cover, two Black Flag covers, and more.
A new tribute album titled Killed By Deaf - A Punk Tribute to Motörhead has been announced, featuring covers of the legendary band's songs by notable punk bands, including Rancid, Pennywise, The Bronx, FEAR, and more. The compilation also includes a never-before-released collab between Motörhead and The Damned on the latter's "Neat Neat Neat," which can be streamed below. Killed By Deaf - A Punk Tribute to Motörhead is set to arrive on October 31st via BMG Recordings,
"This is something we've talked about doing for a while now," Real Estate frontman Martin Courtney said in a press statement. "The title comes from the lyrics to an unreleased song we recorded during the Atlas sessions at Wilco's loft in Chicago back in 2013, which in turn references a great Frank Sinatra record. This feels to us like a worthy addition to the catalog and we hope you all love it."
