Having selected an entirely different starting lineup that included four teenagers from the side that lost to Manchester City at the weekend, Glasner saw his second string impress as Christantus Uche gave them a deserved lead at half-time. But it needed a late equaliser from Justin Devenny to salvage a draw after they conceded two goals in the space of three minutes after the break, with the Northern Irishman and Eddie Nketiah coming closest to snatching the victory in stoppage time.
It was of a piece with him essentially reading the riot act to his players. They had not turned up at the start, he suggested, and the less said about the closing stages, the better apart from the last-gasp winner. It is rare to hear Arteta be so critical but he knew his team had got away with one and he wanted them to know, too.
As first reported here for the Daily Briefing, the Eagles are making Diomande a top target to replace Marc Guehi, who continues to be targeted by Liverpool and other big clubs around Europe. Sporting don't want to sell Diomande and are pointing to his 80m release clause, which one imagines could prove problematic for Palace, but perhaps less so for Chelsea.
He's slotted into the side brilliantly, especially this season after what was a slow start, and obviously was key in the team that won the FA Cup last year. He is another example of what I think is the best thing about Crystal Palace, he works hard for the team, plays his role and there's no ego or arrogance about him.
