After increasing chatter in recent years that Francisco Lindor, the $341 million cornerstone of Cohen's early rebranding of the Mets, would be next in line to take the captain's title, the owner flatly quashed that speculation Monday in no uncertain terms. "As long as I'm owning the team, there will never be a team captain," he said during a wide-ranging 23-minute session with reporters at Clover Park. "That was my decision."
You don't see that type of aggressiveness, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. You have to give [him and fellow Team USA member Nolan McLean] credit because they've been preparing to be in this situation. Already at three ups, already at 46 pitches, that takes a lot of work behind the scenes. The good thing is that he feels good and that he was able to do it.
This is a guy who has played through broken toes and a lower back [injury] two years ago when he could barely walk, and he played through it. We're going to remain optimistic that he's going to be available to us, but we'll just have to wait and see. Knowing the person, knowing the player, the athlete, I'm pretty comfortable saying he's going to be ready to go.
New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor will be evaluated for a stress reaction in his left hamate bone and may need surgery, president of baseball operations David Stearns said Tuesday. Stearns said he was confident that Lindor would be ready for Opening Day if he does undergo surgery, with recovery estimated at six weeks. In other Mets news, Stearns said slugger Juan Soto would be moving from right field to left field this season.
Mets superstar Francisco Lindor and his wife, the parenting podcaster and classically trained violinist Katia Reguero Lindor - who just scored a spot on Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani's inaugural committee - have a new nest to call their own. The All-Star shortstop and "The Unaparent Podcast" star just shelled out $21.2 million for a posh penthouse on the Upper East Side, Gimme Shelter can exclusively reveal.
The 31-year-old star is coming off a year in which he hit .267/.346/.466 in 160 games with a 129 wRC+ that ranked fifth among qualified shortstops. Lindor hit 31 home runs and scored 117 runs in 2025, which more or less matched his totals from 2024, while slightly cutting his strikeout rate to 17.9% and bumping his walk rate to 8.9%. He also remained a threat on the basepaths, matching his career high with 31 stolen bases.
Katia brought out the violin for a memorable rendition of the anthem pregame as Lindor and their three kids watched on. Lindor jumped in celebration while carrying his youngest child, Koa Amani Lindor. Of course, Lindor then ended up smashing a home run in the bottom of the second, and cameras found Katia now celebrating with their children. The couple's daughter, Kalina, also did the "play ball" prior to the game.
"While baseball minds and sportsbooks alike were shocked by the pick, if you had read the tea leaves and done a little bit of research like I did last week, you would not have been shocked by the decision."
