The Atlanta Braves continue the homestand Friday evening with a three game set against the Houston Astros. The fourth-place Braves enter play with a 65-81 record and look to bounce back after coming off a series loss against the Chicago Cubs. Unfortunately for Atlanta, the Astros have a much more impressive 79-68 record and are tied at first in the AL West.
Newcastle United's new forward Yoane Wissa could miss the start of their Champions League campaign after suffering a knee injury, while fellow signing Jacob Ramsey will be sidelined until October. Newcastle signed Wissa in a £55m deal on transfer deadline day, also adding Stuttgart's Nick Woltemade in anticipation of Alexander Isak's British-record move to Liverpool. Wissa scored 19 Premier League goals for Brentford last season, with none of them coming from the penalty spot. Only Mohamed Salah (20) netted more non-penalty goals.
The Valkyries have activated forward Cecilia Zandalasini from injury and have waived center Elizabeth Kitley, the team announced on Monday. Zandalasini has missed the last eight games with a left calf injury she suffered just minutes before the Valkyries' game against the Phoenix Mercury on Aug. 19. Zandalasini is questionable to play in tomorrow's game against the Seattle Storm. According to a release from the team, Zandalasini will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.
Kim has an option for 2026, but that appears to be a player-only option, not a team option or two-way option. So if Kim wishes, he can collect $16 million from Atlanta. Kim has posted a .214/.290/.321 line with a 72 wRC+ in 93 injury-plagued plate appearances. The lower back inflammation that he is suffering is in addition to hamstring and calf issues in his right leg. But when (and if) healthy, he is a solid option 2-4 WAR player.
From flair and ferocity to a teenage sensation netting a last-gasp winner, Liverpool's Premier League clash with Newcastle at St. James' Park on Monday night delivered on all expectations, leaving the Magpies dejected when the final whistle blew. Even after former Everton player Anthony Gordon was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Virgil van Dijk, Newcastle looked more like the side reduced to 10 as they clawed back from 2-0 down to level the scores and seemed poised for a near-impossible winner.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton said Thursday the team got "good news" on wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr.'s groin injury and the third-year veteran should be on track to play in the Sept. 7 season opener against the Tennessee Titans. Mims left Wednesday's practice with the injury, as he walked off the field with the Broncos' medical staff about halfway through the team's on-field work. Mims was taken for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam as well as some additional tests.
Josko Gvardiol was injured for Manchester City's Premier League opener against Wolves. Pep Guardiola's Man City surged to a 4-0 victory at Mollenieux, with goals from new signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki adding to a clinical brace from striker Erling Haaland. Gvardiol, whose injury has been described as a knock', also missed City's pre-season victory over Italian side Palermo in early August.
Braves 3B Austin Riley felt lingering soreness from his abdominal strain when he worked out today. He'll be checked out again by a doctor Wednesday, but it doesn't look like he'll return soon from IL.
Veteran James O'Connor is taking on the playmaking duties for the Wallabies as they look for a win against South Africa despite an injury to Ben Donaldson, which complicates their plan.
Tyreek Hill missed the Dolphins' Wednesday practice with an undisclosed injury but traveled to Chicago for joint practices. Hill engaged in light running and stretching with a trainer.
