In late 2024 and early 2025, whilst undoubtedly mentally unwell, he sent a number of emails, addressed to or copying into his communications bodies representing one or more foreign countries. Those emails contained information which the prosecution say should not have been disclosed in that way, the disclosure of which was damaging to UK national interests.
Today's arrests are part of a long-running investigation and part of our ongoing work to disrupt malign activity where we suspect it. We understand the public may be concerned, in particular the Jewish community, and as always, I would ask them to remain vigilant and if they see or hear anything that concerns them, then to contact us.
As one supervisory special agent has agreed, "one of the upshots [of the Crossfire Hurricane Investigation] has been a relationship with [Mr. Danchenko] which has provided the FBI insights into individuals and to areas that it otherwise was lacking [ ] because of the difficulty with which the FBI has in recruiting people from that part of the world." Russia's Foreign Ministry on Thursday said that it had summoned the German Ambassador's representative to inform them that it had declared a staff member at the German Embassy persona non grata. It called Thursday's move a 'symmetrical response' and said that Germany bore 'full responsibility for the new escalation in bilateral relations.'

Sir Richard Moore the former UK's MI6 spy chief has told Sky News that he finds the tens of thousands of Russian troops killed in Ukraine just in December 2025, "astonishing." Vladimir Putin has lost more troops in Ukraine during fighting in December 2025 than Moscow lost during the ten-year Soviet-Afghan war. The Soviet-Afghan war started in 1979 until 1989 and around 20,000 Soviet soldiers were killed. The Russia President Mikhail Gorbachev called the war a "bleeding wound" and was viewed as a "humiliating mistake." Putin has made the same mistake as Gorbachev made in 1979, as he believed the Afghan war would be a "quick operation," as Moscow wanted to takeover Afghanistan.
The assessment comes amid rising nuclear rhetoric between Moscow and Western governments over future security arrangements for Ukraine following the ongoing conflict. Analysts say Russian officials have amplified statements from the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service to reinforce warnings about potential nuclear escalation. Particular diplomatic pressure appears to be directed at the UK and France, which are leading negotiations within the so-called Coalition of the Willing on potential security guarantees for Ukraine after hostilities end.
