California DMV has approved testing of heavy-duty autonomous vehicles, including semi-trucks, on state roads.
"Based on conversations with stakeholders, including the legislature, it was clear that the support was not there to advance this proposal," Sean Butler, a spokesperson for the governor, said in a statement.
Amazon told Fortune in a statement that the claim the company has abandoned its climate commitments is "categorically false and ignores the facts." "Amazon is already committed to powering our operations even more sustainably and investing in carbon-free energy. This includes supporting two advanced nuclear energy agreements and investing in more than 600 renewable energy projects worldwide," Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser told Fortune in the statement, adding that the company is working to make operations more energy efficient, including data centers.
Over 1,000 Amazon employees have anonymously signed an open letter warning that the company's allegedly "all-costs-justified, warp-speed approach to AI development" could cause "staggering damage to democracy, to our jobs, and to the earth," an internal advocacy group announced on Wednesday. Four members of Amazon Employees for Climate Justice tell WIRED that they began asking workers to sign the letter last month.
The fear is these additional tariffs might hurt Stelco's customers and their ability to sell to their U.S. customers. The trickle-down effect could have adverse impacts.
