Elon Musk is suing OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, claiming deception over the company's nonprofit origins and seeking to restore its nonprofit status.
The process of applying for charitable status is challenging, and especially so for open source organizations, which frequently receive denials. Working together with our attorneys, we prepared an application that explained what Typelevel does and why this work is charitable, citing the unique innovations of our projects, our participation in conferences and mentoring programs, and our commitment to open collaboration.
Commissioners Andrew N. Ferguson, Melissa Holyoak and Mark R. Meador said in a statement, "This case, which we inherited from the previous administration, was filed nearly two years ago and has suffered losses in two motions to dismiss." They cited GCU's "victory" over the Department of Education in its bid for nonprofit status, the department rescinding the $37.7 million fine and the Internal Revenue Service confirming GCU's nonprofit designation.
