Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition is essentially an immersive type show that will offer highly detailed, massive scale looks at the 34 frescoes that make up the chapel's ceiling and collectively tell the story of Genesis.
The Italian palazzo is among some of the most romantic architecture in the world, with styles dating back to the early 16th century, popular with noble families who flourished via trades and banking.
After we bought the palazzo, we lay on the floor in the music room to look at the details in the ceilings-and to understand what we just bought. That spirit of curiosity has guided curatorial decisions, as they placed artworks in conversation with ornate interiors.
Rome is famed for its rich history, iconic ancient landmarks, and delicious cuisine. When you're not working from an internet cafe or coworking space, you'll find yourself stepping back in time at the Colosseum or tucking into local cuisine.
"[The project] has finally restored the perception of the monument's original size and floor level," architect Stefano Boeri said in a statement. "It also offers the public the opportunity to approach its walls and imagine the rhythm and sequence of the ambulatories and arches, now lost. It's a respectful and useful project that completes research carried out by the archaeologists of the Colosseum Archaeological Park."
The intervention 'restored the perception of the monument's original scale and pavement level,' while enabling visitors to approach the structure more directly and understand the sequence of the ambulatory and its arches. This recalibration of levels, based on archaeological findings and geometric studies, also enabled the reorganization of the stormwater drainage system, integrating surface slopes and transitions into the paving design while maintaining coherence with the monument's historical configuration.
The project examines the integration of digital fabrication processes into reinforced concrete construction, highlighting that while materials such as steel and timber have undergone significant transformation through digital production methods, reinforced concrete has largely retained conventional casting techniques. The proposal aims to address this condition by incorporating digitally fabricated components into the construction system.
"Piano piano" is an old Italian saying that sounds nonsensical, but is actually full of wisdom, especially if you, like me, are finding yourself wishing away these frigid winter days and hoping spring and summer gets here fast. These days, I've found myself rushing from one thing to the next, frustrated at the smallest things, from post office lines to just missing my train. And I'm ready to make a change.
I had only just stepped aboard the Riverside Ravel in Avignon, France, and it was already clear this would be no ordinary cruise. There were no lines, no waiting for my suite-just a butler offering to unpack in my room while I enjoyed a flute of vintage Taittinger. My husband and I were sailing the Rhône River from Avignon to Lyon, eating our way through the legendary towns of southeast France, including Arles and Dijon.
People say, 'It's the most Instagrammed house in the world.' About 150,000 photos the last time we checked. That story, Galan says, helped launched an invasion; the home has been besieged by TV and film crews, tourists, art students, architects, wedding parties and a parade of selfie sticks.
Milan is this centrifuge in which there is no past and no future, but an eternal present, even a bit contradictory. Some are not fans of it, but others - like Rafael Leao - immerse themselves in it. A buzz around the city that rarely quiets, especially with the Winter Olympic Games over and Fashion Week beginning with 162 events and 132,000 new visitors.
Italian food products and cuisine have infiltrated just about every corner of the globe, but nothing compares to trying classic Italian dishes at their source-and there's so much more than pizza, pasta, and gelato. Don't expect to find the same dishes on menus all over the country. From carbonara in Rome to the best street food in Palermo, each Italian region has its own recipes.
On the final turn, Atrani appeared through a rock tunnel, its bridge illuminated against the purple night, houses cascading toward the Tyrrhenian Sea. Beneath the bridge, a narrow opening led to 80 whitewashed steps and winding passages to the lobby of our hotel, where the receptionist was waiting with a clunky key.
Our ride was down Venice's Grand Canal, the most famous one in the city, and I knew that was a mistake almost right away. Pulling away from the dock alongside several other boats reminded me of rush hour. Our gondola was sandwiched between two other boats, and I was worried about getting bumped the entire time.
A signature view of Venice by Canaletto brought a strong price for the 18th century Italian master at Christie's on February 4, leading the Old Master week in New York. Hammering at $26 million, it sold for a total of $30.5 million including fees, just over its $30 million pre-sale estimate. Backed by a guarantee and irrevocable bid, it was sure to sell.
