We had spreadsheets, backup plans, a carefully managed budget, and, as two adults in our 50s, decades of experience behind us. What could go wrong? Turns out, plenty. Over the past two and a half years, we've lived in more than a dozen countries and traveled thousands of miles. We've hiked to waterfalls in Bali, wandered the streets of Barcelona, and eaten our way through Thailand.

Europe has never been short on spectacle. Yet beyond the headline cities and endlessly recycled itineraries lies a quieter, deeper continent; one that's best encountered through patience and a willingness to detour from the obvious itinerary. Our 7 wonders of Europe for 2026 in Europe are not places that beg for attention. Instead, they reward those prepared to explore more than a few miles from the nearest airport and linger a little longer than planned.

In reality, most French people do not spend their summers chasing iconic landmarks or ticking destinations off a bucket list. Their idea of a successful vacation is quieter, slower, and often much closer to home. Rather than Paris or Saint-Tropez, they favor rural regions, discreet coastlines, forested hills, and mid-sized towns where life moves at a gentler pace, often staying in family homes, rented gîtes, camping sites, or small guesthouses.

And I'm not alone in this thinking. "Lisbon and Porto are amazing, but Portugal's soul is often found in the smaller towns and rural regions where life moves much more slowly," Sheree M. Mitchell, a Travel + Leisure A-List Travel Advisor, shared. "We send clients all over the Alentejo, Douro Valley, Minho Region, as well as the Azores and Madeira, where the real local magic happens."

Astypalaia has the same pretty, white-washed houses you see on the famous Greek islands, but it's far less busy. The main town is beautiful, with buildings leading up a hill to an old castle. We rented a small apartment and spent our days on quiet pebble beaches that we had almost to ourselves. I went to Texas A&M University. It's a big school in a small-town bubble, where friendliness and tradition rule. I built a good life in Texas. I married a local boy, raised kids, built a career, and did everything the cultural syllabus told me to do. But deep down, I always felt a little out of place, like the transfer student who arrived halfway through the semester.

"Slow travel" is trending, and from my experience, there's nothing slower-or more relaxing-than canal cruising. And it's not just because the average speed is 6 mph. Unlike river cruises, which hop in and out of bustling ports along major waterways, canal cruises are far more tranquil. They float along calmer, narrower channels, typically aboard small houseboats that only accommodate intimate groups.

When Ellis and Scotty Harry welcomed their second child, Bennett, in September 2024, they knew they wanted to celebrate by doing something memorable-and maybe just a little ambitious. They were also staring down a long Pacific Northwest winter with a toddler and a newborn, which made the idea of flying south especially tempting. "We wanted to go somewhere warm but still mountainous," says Ellis. "We love a beach vacation, but after a week, we're ready to move on. Chile gave us summer in February and the dramatic landscapes we crave."
