Most of the extra work that an e-bike provides is from the motor and battery. They provide more failure points on the bike. Servicing those parts added to Paul's workload significantly, and the Bosch system is one of the easier drive systems to service.
At the end of the day, there are certain hidden costs and downsides to owning an electric mountain bike. If you are a set-it-and-forget-it type of person, taking your bike to the shop to get a software update and diagnostics tests run might be a turnoff.
