Authors in Bay Area on Tour for Kids' Book About Censorship Told Not to Discuss Banned, Queer Books
"As the site Book Riot explains, the authors frame the concept of book-banning in an age-appropriate manner using individual preferences as an example. The main character in the book uses his newfound ability to make books disappear to get rid of books on topics he doesn't find interesting, and before he knows it, even the books he likes start to disappear."
"When the authors refused to censor their presentation, they were asked to leave. Our book was literally written because of book banning; we could not leave that out of our presentation, Ho told KRON4. The school district released a statement saying the students who were attending the program ages four to nine were too young to understand the concept of book-banning."
Two children's book creators traveled to Country Club Elementary School in San Ramon on October 17 to present a new picture book to students ages four to nine. School officials told them at the last minute not to mention banned books or queer themes. The book frames book-banning through a child-friendly story about a character who makes books disappear because of personal preference, then loses favorite books too. The presentation contained 45 slides with book pages and informational graphics about nationwide bans. The presenters refused to censor content and were asked to leave. The district said the topic was inappropriate for young children and claims advance notice, which the presenters dispute.
