Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national, killed two students and injured nine others at Brown University. He also shot and killed MIT professor Nuno Loureiro. Neves Valente planned the attack since 2022, driven by feelings of personal failure and a lack of social connections. He confessed to the attacks in recordings without showing remorse. The FBI concluded he acted alone, viewing his victims as symbols of his perceived injustices. Neves Valente had withdrawn from Brown in 2001 and was unemployed at the time of the shootings.
