"This notable agreement with the University of Virginia will protect students and faculty from unlawful discrimination, ensuring that equal opportunity and fairness are restored,"
"We appreciate the progress that the university has made in combatting antisemitism and racial bias, and other American universities should be on alert that the Justice Department will ensure that our federal civil rights laws are enforced for every American, without exception."
"We intend to continue our thorough review of our practices and policies to ensure that we are complying with all federal laws,"
The Department of Justice and the University of Virginia reached a settlement that pauses pending investigations in exchange for university assurances against unlawful practices in admissions, hiring, programming and related areas. UVA agreed to follow a July memo barring the use of race in hiring, admissions and scholarship programs and to provide relevant information and data to the DOJ. The DOJ will close investigations if UVA completes planned reforms prohibiting DEI. The agreement followed the abrupt departure of former president James Ryan and includes UVA leadership commitments to review practices to ensure federal-law compliance.
