Almost 6,000 Dead in 6 Years: How Baltimore Became the U.S. Overdose Capital

Across Baltimore, fatal drug overdoses have occurred on a third of the city's blocks, with bodies found in various locations, including motels, vacant houses, parks, and even near City Hall and the Health Department.

In the past six years, Baltimore has seen nearly 6,000 lives lost to overdoses, with a death rate from 2018 to 2022 almost double that of any other large city and higher than many other crisis periods in different regions of the country.
