Baltimore has long had one of the highest fatal overdose rates of any large U.S. city. But the synthetic opioid fentanyl, up to 50 times more potent than heroin, has taken over the city's drug supply, leading to a significant increase in death rates.
Nearly all illegal opioids in Baltimore now contain fentanyl, making heroin almost impossible to find. The fatal overdose rate in the city has quadrupled since 2013 and was predicted to rise further in 2023.
