He centered his campaign on public safety, education, and a pledge to confront both President Donald Trump and what he called the radical left dividing the Democratic Party. He characterized the race as the most important of his lifetime and framed it as a contest between competing philosophies rather than parties. He rejected suggestions that Trump had endorsed him, criticized Trump’s attacks labeling an opponent a communist, and insisted he is a proud, capable Democrat who can secure federal funding.
