In the last year, just 15% of all 999 calls to the Metropolitan Police have been for genuine emergencies, the force has said. Non-emergency calls included someone who had a spider in their room, another whose dog would not come back into their house, and others who have had no-show delivery drivers. The force said the calls, which totalled 1.87m between July 2024 and July 2025, took up valuable call handler time and stopped them from dealing with genuine emergencies.
It's going to be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York. Because if you have a communist running New York, all you're doing is wasting the money you're sending there.
Anyone who breaks the law will be dealt with directly, as will those who incite hate. We have been working closely with partners including Birmingham City Council, Aston Villa Football Club, our colleagues in other emergency services, as we put in place our significant policing operation. People can expect to see a large number of uniformed officers, as well as police horses, police dogs, our drone unit, road policing unit, protest liaison officers and others.
The plan includes significantly increasing police patrols and enforcing misdemeanor ordinances, investing in infrastructure and new community events, and taking a more business-friendly brush to permits and fees. Officials also plan to be more aggressive in making sure property owners maintain unused properties. The blueprint tackles many "quality of life" issues that critics say have contributed to lower foot traffic in the city's tourist districts since the COVID-19 pandemic.
EXCLUSIVE: Millbrae police chief facing questions for allegedly commuting to work from Idaho Wednesday marked five days since Noyes' first report and Chief Allen was sitting there during the City Council's public comment. He left right after, and the I-Team caught up with him at the police station's front door. "Eamonn, have you found a place to stay besides the police station?" Dan Noyes asked. "Do you have any comments about the report?" He did not respond.
Your duty to intervene increases with the value of the object and the likelihood it will be purloined. You would presumably not be asking if it were a question of, Mister, hands off that baby. Or Get your own can of peas this one is taken. The case you describe may exceed the normal deference shown to the foolishly risk-tolerant.
While there are no "biggest" issues facing District 4 residents at the moment, there are numerous issues equal in priority - some of which are life-threatening. Many of the residents with who I have spoken recently say they are struggling financially, unable to meet their most basic needs, such as, food, housing, transportation. Available data suggests 1-in-3 live below the mean poverty level - I would argue the number is greater.
Boston's municipal general election is on Tuesday. Although Mayor Michelle Wu is running unopposed, voters have many options when it comes to the City Council. Residents can check their voting registration status online. The polls open at 7 a.m. on Tuesday and close at 8 p.m. Residents can find their polling location and other information on how to vote through the city's website.
"Cars ruin everything." That's the bold opening line of Life After Cars, the new book by celebrated transportation media figures Sarah Goodyear, Doug Gordon, and Aaron Naparstek. The writers make a case for that initial assertion, detailing the various ways cars-or, more specifically, car culture as we currently know it-ruin childhoods, destroy wildlife, perpetuate societal injustices, and kill people, to name a few particularly negative effects.
"The trust and the safety of the communities we serve is our highest priority," Waymo's statement says. "We reviewed this, and while our vehicle was stopped to pick up passengers, a nearby cat darted under our vehicle as it was pulling away. We send our deepest sympathies to the cat's owner and the community who knew and loved him, and we will be making a donation to a local animal rights organization in his honor."

"We do not tolerate illegal activity in Yosemite National Park," said Yosemite National Park Superintendent Raymond McPadden. "Our law enforcement rangers remain efficient, effective and vigilant 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. These convictions demonstrate the professionalism and dedication of Yosemite's protection team in upholding federal regulations and ensuring the safety of both visitors and first responders."
The Brooklyn Democrat, who has frequently criticized the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), of which Mamdani is a member, issued a statement Friday afternoon announcing his support of the Mamdani campaign, stating that he deeply respects the will of the primary voters. He cited Mamdani's commitment to addressing the city's affordability crisis as his primary reason for supporting the nominee.
Flynn filed a measure this week that would amend the city's zoning code in order to make adult entertainment businesses in those neighborhoods a "conditional use" rather than an "allowed use." An amendment like this should have been made "decades ago," Flynn said, so that adult entertainment establishments must undergo a significant community review process before being approved. "Residents of a neighborhood deserve a say in what takes place there.
"Many of them also determine the public image in our cities," he said. "That's why so many people in Germany and other countries in the European Union and not just in Germany are now simply afraid to move around in public spaces," said the chancellor. He said those spaces included railway stations, underground trains and parks. "It affects entire neighborhoods, which also cause major problems for our police," he added.
"I watched the first debate," said one voter. "It was like a kangaroo court. Everybody slinging mud. I thought they would be speaking more about policies. I really wanted Mamdani to talk more about what he was for. I would like to hear a little deeper responses."
So, listen, I think that there's a lot of Republicans that are weighing into this race from afar, saying this is going to be great for the Republican Party to hang it around candidates in purple states later on. But there's people in New York here waking up to, this is really serious. This is a serious moment as you close in on Election Day.
Donalds, who was born and lived in Brooklyn, New York, warned that Mamdani's policies would be "devastating to the city of New York," drawing a comparison to the administration of former Mayor Bill de Blasio. "We've just been through this with Bill de Blasio. He was a terrible mayor, the worst that the city's ever had, and Mamdani is trying to beat him. That's not going to be good for the people of New York."
The state already permitted carrying weapons as long as they were kept inside a car or somewhere out of public view, but a court declared a 1987 ruling prohibiting open carry unconstitutional. Now, people can walk around with pistols in their waistbands or rifles and submachine guns slung on their shoulders, except in places where it is expressly prohibited, such as businesses or private properties, which decide whether or not to allow it.
At its worst - like in last week's horrific fatal crash on Flushing Avenue - pedestrians and cyclists are injured or killed. Setting aside that car drivers cause virtually all the injuries and deaths on our streets, every time there is rare crash involving an illegal e-bike, naysayers capitalize by conflating them with safe, legal e-bikes to further an anti-bike agenda. And Mayor Adams has added to the confusion, launching a criminal crackdown on legal e-bikes that has ensnared all kinds of cyclists,
Her Democratic challenger, Nicole Aloise, who moved from the Queens District Attorney's Office to the Nassau County District Attorney's Office, has highlighted her record in the courtroom, including taking on MS-13 gang members, an endorsement from the county's largest employee union and a campaign supported with smaller donations rather than the political committees. Aloise asserts Donnelly isn't fit to lead the office, pointing to an exodus of experienced prosecutors that have resulted in fewer convictions.
the National Guard does not have the authority to arrest drug dealers and sending them to San Francisco will do nothing to get fentanyl off the streets or make our city safer." He added that he would "would welcome stronger coordination with the FBI, DEA, ATF, and U.S. Attorney to execute targeted operations, arrest drug dealers, and disrupt drug markets and multinational cartels.
