The Federal Reserve board met and decided Wednesday that the Fed will cut interest rates by a quarter point. The move sets its benchmark lending rate to between 3.75 percent and 4 percent, the lowest level since 2022. In remarks following the Fed's meeting, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell indicated that it is unclear whether the Fed will further lower interest rates in December, citing differing views among the Fed's board of directors. "There were strongly differing views about how to proceed in December," said Powell.
