According to a recent Bloomberg Intelligence poll, most consumers are not willing to pay for chatbot interactions, indicating a stronger preference for ad-supported monetization over subscriptions. The survey highlighted that around 25% of users have a paid subscription for generative AI tools, often willing to pay up to $20 monthly. In the context of generative AI, OpenAI leads as a major provider, while the report revealed other companies are shifting toward advertising strategies, reflecting a disparity in consumer spending habits compared to traditional internet services.
"The propensity to pay for generative-AI tools remains low," writes the author, Mandeep Singh, Bloomberg Intelligence senior industry analyst, emphasizing the challenge of monetizing AI.
"About 25% of the users who use gen AI have paid subscriptions and are willing to shell out up to $20 for a monthly subscription for features including search, copilots," says Singh.
"Only 8% of Americans would pay extra for AI," highlights a trend showing the reluctance of consumers to invest financially in AI technologies.
Singh noted that the disparity between LLMs and traditional keyword searches illustrates the unique challenges facing monetization strategies in generative AI.
