'North of North,' available on Netflix, is a delightful Canadian comedy set in a fictional Inuk community in Nunavut. The protagonist, Siaja, struggles with a sense of purpose after her daughter starts school and her complicated marriage. A life-changing fall during seal hunting leads her to seek independence and personal fulfillment. Amid witty humor and poignant moments, Siaja navigates her relationships, including with her mother, and discovers her talents while working at the community center, balancing laughter with emotional depth throughout its eight episodes.
The show's abundant warmth and its tenderness for its characters suggest a slightly hokier, cornier show. But the edge and depth of North do emerge.
Siaja's sexual and romantic hijinks are played for laughs and for growth, and the story finds its true heft in the excavation of her mother's pain.
