As smart home devices proliferate and remote work becomes more common, home networks are increasingly vulnerable to cybercriminals. At the RSAC 2025 Conference, Jennifer Minella emphasized that even individuals with low threat levels can be attacked. She highlighted how past breaches, like LastPass, demonstrate the importance of bolstering home network security. Minella categorized users into three groups based on their technological proficiency and security needs, offering tailored advice to enhance security for each type, ultimately stressing that all users should consider their specific requirements to safeguard their networks.
Most people have a pretty low threat level, so they're not likely to be targeted by sophisticated hackers. However, thanks to the explosive growth of smart home devices and work-from-home policies, cybercriminals are starting to attack employees' home networks to bypass corporate security measures.
Not everyone needs the same level of security to protect their smart home devices. For her presentation, Minella divided home tech users into three categories: the low-tech lifer, the DIY home admin, and the hardened defender.
