Spain denies US permission to use jointly operated bases to attack Iran
"I want to be very clear and very plain. The bases are not being used nor will they be used for anything that is not in the agreement [with the US], nor for anything that isn't covered by the UN charter."
"There is a deal with the US over these bases, but our understanding of the deal is that operations have to comply with international legal frameworks and that there has to be international support for them."
"Today, more than ever, it's vital to re[establish lasting political solutions]. The offensive was making the world less stable and called for a lasting political solution to the conflict."
Spain's socialist government, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has explicitly refused to allow the United States to use jointly operated military bases at Rota and Moron for military operations against Iran. Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares and Defence Minister Margarita Robles emphasized that any base usage must comply with international legal frameworks and UN charter provisions. Spain condemned the US and Israeli military actions as unjustified and destabilizing to the international order. Despite US aircraft departing from these bases, Spanish officials maintained that the bases were not being used for ongoing strikes against Iran and would not be used for operations outside their bilateral agreement parameters.
