With new album, rockers Birth (Defects) complete unfinished business
Briefly

Sean Gray, a veteran of underground music, experienced burnout after years of creating. A hiatus allowed him to reconnect with music as a listener, leading to the upcoming release of 'Deceiver/Mirror', an unfinished album from his band Birth (Defects). Recorded in 2017, its release in May symbolizes a closure for Gray and guitarist Rob Savillo. Their aspiration to collaborate with renowned producer Steve Albini encapsulates the hope of achieving their 'dream record' while overcoming the challenges of past setbacks and personal grief.
I want to just put this thing out and have it out for us. But if this is going to be it, I want to work with the best people possible to finish this.
At the end of my elevator pitch, I was like, 'We'd really like Steve Albini to mix the record.' And he was like, 'Well, I'm Steve, and I'll mix your record.'
Mixing the record at Electrical, while a dream, would be a significant investment for musicians accustomed to recording in friends' basements.
The album will see the light of day in May, after an unlikely journey full of setbacks and marked by grief.
